Transition Lenses: Yay or Nay? BY DR. JOSEPH COHEN | WOODLAND HILLS EYE DOCTOR

For the less visually gifted among us, the sun can be a huge problem in conjunction with our existing glasses. You either have to pay for a second pair of glasses with tinted lenses and carry them around, or you have to have some sort of cover for your glasses. Whether it is an entirely separate pair or an add-on for your regular frames, the struggle is real. At some point, someone got tired of this and the photochromic (transition) lens came to be. This lens will darken under the rays of the sun and return to normal when you go back inside. While the photochromic lens has been around for some time, the options for these have grown. Now there are materials other than glass and colors for lenses other than grey. The most common brand is “Transitions”, but they are not the only game in town these days. PhotoFusion, Thin & Dark, and Sensity have lenses on the market. The method in which photochromic lenses darken has evolved as well. Old school models used silver halide or si

Why Spring for Name Brand Sunglasses? by Dr. Joseph Cohen | Woodland Hills Eye Doctor

Image
Buying cheap sunglasses when you don’t have a prescription seems like a pretty sweet deal. You have options and can have multiple pairs at once. In places where protecting your eyes from the sun is a matter of necessity, having something is better than nothing. Why shell out a couple hundred bucks for one pair when you could just as easily get eight or ten pairs and have a variety? Well, how long do those last? For ten dollars, what is the drive for the manufacturers to make a super sturdy pair of sunglasses? If screws are falling out, lenses loosening, or the materials are stretching then you will become a repeat customer. That’s not to say that you can’t buy a cheap pair that never seems to lose its structural integrity, it’s just not as likely. Sunglasses are essential for eye health whether you live in a location where it feels that way or not. Assuming you live in an area where the sun is constantly beating down, they are vital. In truth, sunglasses should be treat

7 Reasons Why You Should Always Wear Sunglasses by Dr. Joseph Cohen

Image
People have their own reasons for wearing sunglasses. Many believe that eye protection is an overall preventative measure. Some just enjoy the way they look. Most people wear them for the simple fact that it can cut down on the glare from the sun. Sunglasses are a bit like sunscreen. They should be worn more often when you are outdoors. Here are seven reasons why. 1. Prevention of Sun-Related Health Problems Eyes are the window to the soul and windows are fragile. Perhaps not as fragile as our eyes though. Spending too much time in the sun without protecting those peepers can lead to many health problems. “High Quality” does not equal “Super Expensive” either. It simply means choosing a pair with UVA and UVB protection. Polarized lenses reduce glare and wrap-around frames provide protection from all sides. If you are spending time around water, polarized is a must to protect from the reflection of the sun on water. Now, what are these health problems? Read more at: htt

If they think they are going to get teased, that is an entirely different issue. Looking back you may remember the nicknames people with glasses received in school. Does “four eyes” sound familiar?
